What is telecare and how does it work?

Telecare is a technology-enabled support service that helps people live independently in their own homes. It uses a variety of devices and sensors to monitor people’s well-being and to provide assistance when needed. Telecare can be used by people of all ages and abilities, but it is particularly beneficial for older people and people with disabilities.

How does telecare work?

Telecare systems typically consist of a base unit and a number of sensors or devices. The base unit is connected to a telephone line or mobile network, and it allows people to communicate with a 24/7 monitoring centre. The sensors and devices can be used to monitor a variety of things, such as movement, falls, temperature, fires, and floods.

If a sensor is pressed or a device detects a problem, it will send an alert to the monitoring centre. An experienced advisor at the monitoring centre will then assess the situation and take appropriate action. This may involve contacting the person’s emergency contacts, sending a responder to the person’s home, or calling an ambulance.

Types of telecare devices

There is a wide variety of telecare devices available, and the specific devices that are most appropriate for a person will depend on their individual needs. Some common types of telecare devices include:

Personal alarm buttons

These buttons can be worn on a pendant around the neck or wrist, and they allow you to call for help with the press of a button.

Fall detectors

These devices can detect when someone has fallen and automatically send an alert to the monitoring centre.

Bed occupancy sensors

These sensors detect movements in and out of bed. They can be used to alert the monitoring centre if someone has not moved or returned for a period of time, or if they have got into or left their bed unexpectedly.

Temperature extreme sensors

These sensors can be used to monitor the temperature in a home. This can be useful for people who are at risk of hypothermia or hyperthermia.

Smoke detectors

A telecare smoke detector works in the exact same way as an ordinary smoke detector, but it also alerts the monitoring centre in the event of an emergency. This gives reassurance that someone is there to call the fire brigade for those who may not hear a smoke detector.

Flood detectors

This detector will attempt to audibly alert you if there is a flood in your home. It will also immediately notify the 24/7 monitoring centre so assistance can be sent too.

Carbon monoxide detectors

These detectors can detect the presence of carbon monoxide in the home, and notify the monitoring centre so assistance can be arranged.

Benefits of telecare

Telecare offers a number of benefits, including:

Increased independence

Telecare can help people to live independently in their own homes for longer. By providing reassurance and support, telecare can help people to manage their health conditions and to stay safe.

Reduced risk of falls and accidents

Telecare can help to reduce the risk of falls and accidents by providing people with a way to call for help quickly and easily. This is particularly important for older people and people with disabilities.

Peace of mind for families and carers

Telecare can give families and carers peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are safe and that help is available if needed.

How to get telecare

Telecare is available through a variety of providers, including Reach & Respond.

The cost of telecare will vary depending on the specific devices and services that are required, and sometimes you may be able to access funding for telecare through your local authority if a need is identified through an assessment.
