Falls in the elderly: How to stay safe and get help

A fall can be a scary experience, especially if you’re on your own. Falls are a major risk for elderly people. In fact, one in three adults over the age of 65 will fall each year. Falls can cause serious injuries, including fractures, head injuries, and loss of consciousness.

There are many factors that can contribute to falls in the elderly, including:

  • Decreased strength and balance: As we age, our muscles and bones weaken, which can make us more likely to fall
  • Vision problems: Vision problems that occur as we age can make it more difficult to see where you are going
  • Medications: Some medications can cause dizziness or drowsiness, which can increase the risk of falls
  • Environmental hazards: Environmental hazards, such as loose rugs or uneven surfaces, can also be a contributing factor.

Reduce your risk of falling and know what to do if you do fall

Whilst things like exercise to improve your strength and balance can help to reduce your risk of falling, it’s also important to have a plan in place if you do fall to ensure you can get help as quickly as possible.

At Reach & Respond, we work in partnership with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to provide a faster response to low-level falls. These are falls where you may just need some assistance to get back on your feet and first aid, without the need for hospital treatment.

Our responders are first aid qualified and carry lots of equipment to ensure your safety, including lifting equipment and defibrillators.

We also have an average call out time of just 24 minutes, so you can be sure that help will be on its way quickly.

Right now we’re running a summer special offer, where you’ll receive a free fortnightly visit from a responder when you take out a 6-week free trial of our Monitor & Response support package.

You’ll receive a lifeline base unit, wearable pendant, 24/7 monitoring, and support from our team of responders should you need to call for help.

Additional Services

In addition to our Monitor & Response service, Reach & Respond also offers a range of other support packages that can help to keep you safe and supported. These services include:

  • Reassurance calls and visits: We can arrange for a responder to call or visit you regularly to check on your wellbeing and offer reassurance
  • Telecare: Telecare uses sensors to monitor your activity levels to detect events in the home, such as falls. If you fall, the Reach & Respond team will be alerted automatically and send help if necessary.

Try Reach & Respond risk-free to find out if the service is right for you, get to know our friendly team and see how we can help you.
